Often described as the “toughest foot race in the world”, 2009 marked the 24th edition of the infamous Marathon des Sables. It involves running 256kms (154 miles) across the Sahara desert, under the searing heat of the Moroccan sun, which for some will have been the biggest challenge of their lives.  However, on the 27th March the 807 runners were faced with a new challenge – rain.  And very few could have predicted that the heavens above the Sahara would open to the extent they did, as can be seen in the video below.
