Tobias Mews is a freelance multi-media journalist specialising in health,fitness & adventure sports. After serving in the British Army for 5 1/2 years, Tobias developed a taste for the outdoors and in particular endurance sports. He spends many of his weekends competing in ultra marathons, Ironman triathlons, adventure races and mountain marathons.
Journalism
Tobias specialises in high quality multi-media journalism through the medium of video, audio, photography, print and online. He has been at the vanguard of videojournalism both practising and in training others.
After graduating from the prestigious City University with a PGDip in Television Current Affairs Journalism (2008–09), he became the New Media Officer in the Central Office of Information’s (COI) News and PR department. During this time he worked on a number of high profile government campaigns for the Department of Health, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Education, Health and Safety Executive, and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, amongst others.
Prior to working at COI, Tobias was on various work placements. From October 2008 to January 2009, he worked part time for the BBC on the travel programme Fast:Track, broadcast on BBC World News. From January to April 2009 he worked in the current affairs section of the television production company October Films. And in his final semester he spent three months working at ITN on the forward planning desk.
Military
Tobias commissioned in April 2004 from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst into the Royal Regiment of Artillery.
A newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Tobias’s first posting was as a Troop Commander with 40th Regiment Royal Artillery in Topcliffe, North Yorkshire. Upon arriving at the Regiment, he immediately deployed to Cyprus on the United Nations tour — Operation TOSCA. In October 2006, on promotion to Captain, he once again deployed with his sub-unit - 137 (Java) Battery — to Iraq for 7 months on Operation TELIC 9. Based in South Eastern Iraq, near Basrah, Tobias was responsible for up to 45 soldiers, leading them on numerous operations in support of 19 Light Brigade.
On being posted to 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in September 2007, he completed the Captains Course, becoming a qualified Fire Support Team Commander. He subsequently returned to Iraq again for 3 months on Op TELIC 11, in December 2007, this time with D Battery. He spent the remainder of his time in the Army as the Operations Officer and Battery Training Officer of M (HQ) Battery in Hohne, Germany. He retired his Commission in September 2008 in order to become a journalist.
He captained the Regimental Cross-Country, Triathlon and Skiing teams.
For a brief period of time he joined the Territorial Army, becoming a Company Second in Command at the University of London Officer Training Corps. He discovered that there are only so many balls that one can juggle and therefore retired!
Work Experience
Before joining the Army, Tobias carried out a number of high profile work placements with: the United Nations in Haiti, the New York State Department of Economic Development in London, the commercial section of the Brazilian Embassy in London and the TV/Radio station Imagen Infomativa in Mexico City.
Education
He studied French at the University of Poitiers and International Business with Spanish at the European Business School London (EBS). Whilst at EBS, he spent study periods abroad at Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Vina del Mar, Chile and the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid, Spain. He holds a host PG Dip in Television Current Affairs Journalism from City University.
He speaks fluent French and Spanish and has a working knowledge of German and Italian.
Sport and Adventure
Tobias regularly participates in running races of all distances (from 5k to ultra marathon) as well as triathlon (Sprint, Olympic, Half-Ironman and Ironman distances) and duathlon. Tobias captained this Regimental ski team in Alpine downhill skiing (whilst at 40RA). He is a qualified Mountain Leader Trainer (Summer) and holds a BSAC Open Water scuba certificate. At Millfield he undertook the Duke Of Edinburgh Gold Award scheme.
